What Results Do You Want?   Try A Different Approach!”

I was reading a book and came across this quote:

“We cannot solve problems using the
same thinking that created them.”
- Albert Einstein

I love Einstein’s quotes…  he not only was a brilliant
man but very practical in his thoughts as well.

I liken this quote to another one I use all the time that was told to me by my father:

“The definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results!”

It is like this in horse training, too.

If you go out and work with your horse the same way each time yet don’t see different results then perhaps you need to change your methods!

With so many things in life and with horses…just a small change, a different approach or a little bit of knowledge
can make all the difference in the world.

If you’re fighting your horse over a bad behavior of any kind and it’s not gettin’ any better then stop and take a step back.

Look at the situation – what are you doing to encourage the right behavior?  Are you showing your horse the right thing you want him to do and then praising him for the right action?

So much of horse training is showing your horse the right thing and then giving them the feedback and praise when they even just start to do it right.

Some things are harder then others.  If your horse has developed a bad behavior over months or years then don’t expect to cure it in one session.  It may take a few times.

But the key is this:

- You need a new approach and some knowledge to make the change

- You need to be consistent when working them and NOT let them
get away with the bad behavior.

So I encourage you to step back, reflect on what’s happening and make a plan of attack.  Most good results don’t happen by accident.

Also – most of the things that need fixing can be done in a few short lessons.  Take one at a time.  Work on it and fix it. Do NOT go on to the next thing until your horse understands
the one thing you are working on.

Over a period of just a few weeks you could have a completely new horse that’s a joy to ride and work with.  Your whole outlook about your horse could change from frustration to
a new relationship with him.

You see…  even a small change and improvement will give you the encouragement to keep going.  And your horse will sense and react to changed attitude you have towards him
as well.

Start now…  make a plan and work it.  Adjust it as needed.

Got a few minutes to spend with your horse this week or the next few days?  Make that investment in your horse and you’ll both be in better shape.
